Black and white photos have a certain charm. But it turns out that they have a certain charm in colour, too! In partnership with the media preservation company Photomyne, we’ve released a feature that helps you create colour-enhanced images. You don’t need to worry about losing your original photo; you can always revert it back.

Colourising a photo

1. From a family tree, click on someone whose photo you want to colourise > select Profile or View Profile.
2. Select the Gallery tab. In the Ancestry app, you may need to scroll right to see it. 
3. Select the photo you want to colourise.
4. Click on Edit photo (desktop) or tap Edit (in the app). 
5. Click or tap Colourise. 
6. To save the colourised version, select Save. If the photo you used was a profile photo, the colourised version will now replace the original in your tree–but the original version is still there, and you can change it back anytime.

Reverting back to the original photo

1. From a family tree, click on someone whose photo you want to change > select Profile or View Profile.
2. Select the Gallery tab. In the Ancestry app, you may need to scroll right to see it. 
3. Select the photo you want to change.
4. Click on Edit photo (desktop) or tap Edit (in the app). 
5. (Desktop only) Click or tap Colourise. 
6. Select the black and white photo > Save.
